Goods & Services Tax (GST)
A multi-stage, destination-based tax levied on every value addition, replacing multiple indirect taxes to create a unified taxation system.
About Goods & Services Tax (GST)
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is an indirect tax applied on the supply of goods and services in India. It is a multi-stage, destination-based tax levied on every value addition.
GST replaced multiple indirect taxes such as VAT, excise duty, and service tax to create a unified taxation system. The concept of GST was introduced in the Budget Speech of 28th February 2006, with the aim of implementing a uniform tax structure across India.
What is GST Registration?
GST Registration is the process by which a taxpayer gets registered under GST. After registration, a unique 15-digit GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is issued. This GSTIN is used for all tax filings and payments.
Threshold Limits for Registration
- Goods: ₹40 lakh annual turnover
- Services: ₹20 lakh annual turnover
- Special Category States: ₹20 lakh (goods) and ₹10 lakh (services)
Types of GST Registration
Depending on the nature and scale of your business operations, you may fall into different taxpayer categories.
Normal Taxpayer
Most businesses in India fall under this standard category. Once registered, this registration has no expiry date.
Casual Taxable Person
Designed for temporary or seasonal businesses. This registration is valid for 3 months but can be extended if required.
Composition Taxpayer
A simplified scheme offering lower taxes. However, taxpayers get no input tax credit and are not allowed to make interstate supplies.
Non-Resident Taxable
For individuals or businesses located outside India that are supplying goods or services within India. Valid for 3 months (extendable).

Small businesses enjoy higher threshold limits compared to previous VAT regimes, reducing their compliance burden.
Composition Scheme
Small enterprises can opt for the composition scheme, offering a simplified tax filing process and lower tax rates.
Fully Online Process
From registration to returns filing, the entire GST process is simplified and conducted completely online.
Reduced Number of Returns
Consolidated tax filing dramatically reduces the sheer volume of compliance and returns required previously.
E-commerce Regulations
Brings clearly defined rules and operational structures specifically tailored for the booming e-commerce sector.
